Grammar, by Tim Thorne.
The runes and ratchets of our time
picked from the soft stone, ore
forged and formed, cog and rhyme,
base and superstructure for
the shape in which we change and grow.
Architecture: history
frozen in the logos, so
is language the struggle to be free.
The way men work, the relationship
between them and what they do
shapes the syntax of the age.
As the machines stick and slip,
as the suffixes accrue,
so the lines run on the page.
From Red Dirt, 1990, Paper Bark Press.
